During a Segment on The Breakfast Club, The Breakfast Club host Charlamagne Tha God talked about a recent video ad that Louisiana State Senator John Kennedy released. Senator Kennedy ran a 30-second video ad for his re-election. He is running against Democrats Gary Chambers Jr., Luke Mixon, and Syrita Steib.
The ad in question is a short video in which Senator Kennedy sends a shocking message to people who “hate cops”, saying to call a crackhead the next time they get in trouble. Charlamagne said senator Kennedy is using a strategy that both Republicans and Democrats are tapping into, and that is the public’s fears about the high crime rate all over the country. He emphasized that both Republicans and Democrats are using this strategy countrywide.
He notes that even Joe Biden, who brought the 1986 and 1994 crime bills, is also using the high crime rates across the country to his own benefit as well. Charlamagne also added that President Biden’s Safer America Act is his crimefighting strategy adding that the strategy will cost about $37 billion, and will include money to hire and train at least 100,000 police officers. “Every politician wants to be the politician that can ensure public safety to the people because that is something that folks will think about when they are in the voting booth,” added Charlamagne. Charlamagne also talked about Senator Kennedy taking it a step further, pointing out that crime is not just on the rise in Louisiana, he is blaming it on marchers protesting about police brutality, and people advocating to defund the police.
The Breakfast Club host clarified the meaning of “Defund the police”, saying it means to fund alternative services such as mental health programs and job training, that will reduce crime. Charlamagne added that he personally believes in this because it’s getting to the root of the issue. Charlamagne Tha God added that it’s easy to be tough on crime after the fact, but when you invest in people early and provide them the resources they need, you can keep them from turning to a life of crime in the first place.
Charlamagne noted that the message shows that Senator Kennedy is ignoring the concerns of the black people of Louisiana, who are tired of being victims of police brutality. He added that as a senator, you should be against police brutality. Charlamagne proceeded to say John Kennedy will never truly be against police brutality because the police are brutalizing the people that John Kennedy is demonizing in the video, and that is Black people.
