20 Dj Silver Knight

The votes are in and the people have spoken. Radio Facts is proud to present the results of our 2013 Top 20 DJ promotion — one of the most competitive and exciting reader-driven campaigns we have ever run. From the moment we opened the polls, the urban radio community showed up in a major way, casting thousands of votes for the men and women behind the mixes, the mixshows, and the moments that keep Black radio alive and relevant every single day. We also sweetened the deal — Radio Facts put $1,000 on the line for the number one vote-getter, and the competition was fierce. After all the votes were counted, one name stood alone at the top. Ladies and gentlemen, here are your Radio Facts 2013 Top 20 DJ Winners — chosen entirely by you.

Detroit-born and Atlanta-made, DJ Silver Knight is one of those cats who lives and breathes hip hop and R&B from every angle—MC, producer, DJ, curator, and culture head. He came up in Atlanta’s club scene, learning from local veterans and rocking rooms from Buckhead to the Southside, blending crunk, trap, and slow-jam R&B into sets that never let the floor breathe. That energy took him on the road with artists like Bone Crusher and Jagged Edge, proving he could move a crowd in any market. On the radio side, Silver Knight put in time with Radio One in Atlanta, interning at Hot 107.9 before becoming a mixer and on-air personality at Boom 102.9 and Majic 107.5/97.5. These days you’ll find him curating “50 Years of Hip Hop” and 90s R&B mixes, running his Vinyl Fiends record shop/brand, and bringing an authentic urban soundtrack to brands and events that want the real thing.

19 DJ Dimepiece

DJ Dimepiece turned a college internship into a full-fledged R&B and hip hop radio career, then flipped that into a personal brand that lives on-air, online, and on the streets. The West Coast native found her voice at Fisk University in Nashville, where she moved from intern at 88.1 WFSK to live mixes and shifts at Blazin’ 106.7. From there she hit the circuit—Power 93.3 in Huntsville and then 101.1 The WIZ in Cincinnati—where “Dime Time Radio” became her calling card, a night show built on personality, artist interviews, and club-level mixes. Dimepiece later landed in major markets like Chicago’s WGCI and Columbus. Off the air, she’s built Dime Time TV and a strong digital footprint as a beauty and lifestyle creator, merging hair, makeup, and fashion content with the same hip hop and R&B energy that made her a name on radio.

For nearly two decades in Savannah, he held down E93 and other Cumulus properties, working middays and afternoons while helping shape the sound of the station behind the scenes as assistant and interim program director. Cabine’s style is laid-back but locked-in—grown-folks R&B, current hip hop, and classic jams delivered with a warmth that kept listeners riding with him year after year. When he’s not on the air, Kenya moves in the voiceover and acting world, using the same rich tone that listeners know from radio to cut commercials, narrations, and character roles.

Off the air, Mike is the force behind the “Fat Laces and Fades” 80s concert series, selling out shows built on true-school hip hop and R&B nostalgia. He also partners with World Wide Star Events and promotes parties and concerts throughout the region, making him both a cornerstone of 92Q and a key player in the local live scene.

2 Lorenzo Ice-Tea Thomas 3561 Votes (2nd Place)

Lorenzo “Ice-Tea” Thomas is a certified radio vet whose name still rings out in urban markets from Miami to Orlando. He locked in his rep at WEDR 99 JAMZ in Miami with “The Afternoon Jump-Off,” a drive-time show that mixed hip hop, R&B, comedy, and caller interaction into a must-listen block for South Florida. Lorenzo also appeared on BET and other outlets, interviewing artists and entertainers. Today he holds down afternoons on Star 94.5 in Orlando and connects with Miami again on Hot 105. On top of that, he’s working with Outspoken Media Group on TV and film projects, moving from just “radio guy” to a broader content and brand strategist in Black media.

1 The Poetess 6362 Votes (Digital and Radio Facts 2013 Top 20 DJ #1 WINNER)

Felicia “The Poetess” Morris is one of the quiet architects of hip hop and R&B radio, and one of the few who has successfully moved from talent to ownership while staying rooted in the culture. She started on the air at age five on KDIA-AM in the Bay, sitting in with her father Johnny Morris, a respected DJ and engineer, and learning radio from the inside out. After relocating to Los Angeles, she co-hosted the nationally syndicated “Hip Hop Countdown & Report,” which aired in more than 30 markets. As an artist, she became the first female rapper signed to Interscope Records, releasing Simply Poetry in 1992 and scoring the single “Love Hurts,” which climbed into The Gavin Report’s Top 10 rap radio chart. On L.A. radio, she spent years at KKBT/92.3 The Beat (later 100.3 The Beat), breaking records from artists like Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, and Next, and later produced/co-hosted shows for Jamie Foxx’s “The Foxxhole” on SiriusXM. Today, as owner of Morris Media Studios, she serves as a radio vet, hip hop historian, and podcast strategist.

And that’s a wrap on the Radio Facts 2013 Top 20 DJ countdown. From Baltimore to the Bay Area, from the DMV to Detroit, from Atlanta to Savannah, this list is a testament to the depth of talent that lives inside urban radio every single day. These are the DJs who show up before the city wakes up and stay on long after it goes to sleep, and their listeners made sure they got their flowers. Congratulations to every DJ who made this list — earning the respect and votes of the community you serve is no small thing. And a very special congratulations to Felicia “The Poetess” Morris, your number one winner with an impressive 6,362 votes and the $1,000 prize to go along with it. A legend in every sense of the word, and clearly the people agree. Thank you to everyone who voted, shared, and made this one of the most memorable promotions in Radio Facts history. We will definitely be doing this again.
