Unique New Orleans Church Blends Music, Humor, and Faith

Here’s a unique church in New Orleans where music and laughter meet faith.

In a vibrant twist on traditional worship, Forword Christian Church in New Orleans blends performance, humor, and spirituality to create a welcoming environment for its congregation. Founded by Rev. Larry Rodgers, the church reflects his belief that faith can be both sincere and enjoyable, a philosophy he cultivated over years of experience in both the music industry and ministry.

Rodgers, who previously worked as a hype man for famous rapper MC Hammer, emphasizes the importance of community and personal expression within his church. Unlike many traditional settings that can feel rigid and overly dogmatic, Forword encourages its members to embrace their individuality while fostering a deep connection to the Gospel. Rev. Rufus, Rodgers’ playful alter ego, serves as a comedic street preacher who uses humor to address serious life issues, including homelessness, making the church approachable for everyone.

“We want people to understand that we stand for holiness without wavering,” Rodgers explains. “However, we also want them to know the love of God is here for them.” The blend of conventional praise, interactive conversations, and lighthearted moments cultivates a space where parishioners feel free to explore their faith and support one another.

Rodgers’ journey to founding Forword Christian Church started with his passion for music. Writing songs since the age of 12, he toured the world in the 1990s with big names in the industry, including Diddy and TLC. However, a spiritual awakening in 1995 led him to step away from his secular career and pursue a calling that he had long avoided.

After releasing his first gospel album in 1999, he turned his creative talents toward helping others, launching Forword Publishing to empower aspiring writers. His mission is clear: to inspire those in his community, particularly the youth, to share their stories and develop their skills. “We published our first book, ‘The Family That Prays Together, Succeeds Together,’ to encourage people to write,” he notes.

Rodgers’ family plays an integral role in his ministry and publishing ventures. With his wife and son actively involved, he describes their collaboration as a “family affair.” His son even penned his first book at just seven years old. Today, Forword Publishing not only produces books but also compiles anthologies of children’s stories, promoting literacy among young people.

As Forword Christian Church continues to grow, Rodgers remains committed to blending his passions. Through music, humor, and a focus on community support, he aims to create an atmosphere where people feel valued and inspired to live out their faith.
