The Wanderer: Dion DiMucci Broadway Musical

Big news: The Wanderer, a fresh Broadway musical about Dion DiMucci, is set for an industry reading in New York soon.

The Broadway-bound musical, The Wanderer, inspired by the life of legendary musician Dion DiMucci, will hold an invitation-only industry reading in New York City on January 23rd. This reading marks a significant step as the show moves closer to its Broadway debut.

The production is brought to life by producers Jill Menza and Charles Messina, along with new additions Stevie Van Zandt and Maureen Van Zandt, who join forces with the iconic DiMucci himself. The musical portrays the formative years of Dion’s life and career, capturing the vibrant energy and personal struggles of a rising star.

Joshua Bassett, known for his role in Disney’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, will take center stage as Dion. He’ll be joined by Olivia Holt, who has graced Broadway in Chicago and appeared in the TV series Cruel Summer, portraying Susan. Diego Andres Rodriguez, who has performed in productions like Sunset Boulevard and EVITA, will play Johnny.

The reading will also feature a talented ensemble, including actors Tommy Bracco, Stephen Cerf, and Sarah Daniels, among others. Each actor will lend their voice to the diverse characters that populate Dion’s compelling story.

The Wanderer first premiered at Paper Mill Playhouse in 2022 and has since been refined by a team of experienced creatives. The show is penned by Charles Messina and directed by Emmy nominee Kenneth Ferrone, with choreography by Sarah O’Gleby and orchestrations from Sonny Paladino, who has previously worked on productions such as Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812.

In describing the musical, Messina emphasized Dion’s authentic journey from Bronx childhood to music fame, characterizing it as a tale of personal highs and lows. Jill Menza also expressed excitement about the upcoming reading, remarking on the electric energy of the cast, which she believes captures Dion’s enduring spirit and the soulful impact of his music.

Stevie Van Zandt highlighted Dion’s role as a musical innovator, noting his influence over several generations of artists. Maureen Van Zandt echoed this sentiment, pointing out the inspiration that Dion’s life story provides. Together, they believe The Wanderer will compellingly convey Dion’s journey, celebrating both his music and the man himself.

The Wanderer aims to be a raw and honest portrayal of the struggles and triumphs that come with fame, set against the backdrop of Dion’s iconic music that helped shape a generation. The musical resonates deeply with themes of addiction, resilience, and the pursuit of dreams, showcasing the complexities of a life illuminated by the spotlight.

Dion’s influence on music is undeniable, having collaborated with notable artists throughout his career, including legends like Bruce Springsteen and Paul Simon. The upcoming reading of The Wanderer provides an exciting glimpse into the life of a true music pioneer whose legacy continues to inspire.
