New Messaging Features Expand Sharing on Spotify

Spotify’s new messaging features are all about enhancing real-time music sharing among friends; it’s a game-changer for user engagement.

On January 7, 2026, Spotify unveiled two exciting new features within its messaging system: Listening Activity and Request to Jam. These additions are designed to significantly enhance the music-sharing experience for Spotify’s 696 million monthly users. These new capabilities aim to address user demand for a more interconnected way to share musical moments with friends and family through the platform’s existing Messages feature, which has grown to nearly 40 million users.

Listening Activity allows users to see what their friends are currently listening to in real time. When a user is not listening to anything, the most recently played track will be displayed instead. This feature is opt-in, ensuring that only those already connected through Messages can view a user’s listening habits, thus maintaining a level of privacy and control over shared information.

To activate this feature, users can navigate to their Privacy and social settings in the app. Once enabled, friends can see each other’s listening activity directly in the chat interface, making it easy to add songs to playlists or start playback. Users can react to their friends’ choices with a selection of emojis, enriching the interactive experience.

Complementing Listening Activity is the Request to Jam feature, which enables collaborative listening opportunities. This function allows users to immediately invite friends to join them in a shared listening session when they know someone is available. By tapping a button in the chat, Premium users can send out Jam requests. Upon acceptance, both participants can collaboratively create a playlist and listen to music together, enhancing social interaction around music.

These features have evolved from Spotify’s earlier social functionalities, such as Friend Activity, which did not offer the same level of control over who could see a user’s listening behavior. Instead, the new system fosters intimacy by relying on existing communication patterns, showing that Spotify aims to cultivate deeper connections among its users.

The rollout began on January 7, 2026, targeting messages-enabled markets on iOS and Android devices, with expectations for broader availability by early February. Users aged 16 and older can take advantage of these features, ensuring safety while enabling users to connect through shared musical experiences.

This move towards more integrated social functionalities is part of Spotify’s ongoing strategy to create a more engaging ecosystem for users. By allowing for shared experiences, Spotify not only increases user retention but also opens up new opportunities for advertisers by keeping users within the platform longer. The introduction of these features signals Spotify’s commitment to evolving beyond just a music streaming service into a robust social platform focused on community and collaboration.
