Music Industry Shifts as Social Media Shapes Discovery

As 2025 wraps up, the music scene is transforming like never before, driven by social media and genre-blending. We’re witnessing a new era of artist discovery and sound evolution.

As the year nears its end, industry insiders are pondering the future of music in the latter half of the 2020s. The landscape has changed dramatically over the past five years, with technology playing a pivotal role in shaping how artists emerge, connect with fans, and produce music.

One significant factor is TikTok, which has evolved from its origins as Musical.ly to become a powerhouse for music promotion. With nearly 2 billion active users, the platform has facilitated the rise of countless artists like Tate McRae, Doja Cat, and Benson Boone, who harnessed its viral potential to skyrocket to fame. New talents are continually emerging, evidenced by artists like Ravyn Lenae, Doechii, and Sombr gaining recognition through their TikTok presence.

The artist’s approach to genre has also undergone a marked transformation. In the early to mid-2010s, many musicians confined themselves to specific genres, rarely breaking free from established norms. However, the late 2010s and early 2020s have ushered in a trend of genre-blending. Iconic figures such as Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Post Malone, and Kanye West have ventured beyond their initial genres, creating eclectic sounds that include elements of pop, country, rap, indie, and hip-hop.

Moreover, the production style in music has shifted away from the party-centric themes of the past decade. While upbeat tracks remain popular, there’s a notable rise in emotionally resonant songs characterized by intense musical bridges and rich soundscapes. The 2010s were dominated by instruments like electric guitars and pianos, but in recent years, producers have leaned heavily on keyboards, synths, and basses. Some standout tracks from this new wave include “Good Luck, Babe” by Chappell Roan, “Save Your Tears” by the Weeknd, “Dial Drunk” by Noah Kahan, and “As It Was” by Harry Styles.

Looking ahead, the expectation is that social media will continue to play a crucial role in artist discovery, with platforms like TikTok becoming even more integral to an artist’s launchpad to success. Additionally, the trend of genre experimentation is likely to flourish, with indie and country music potentially gaining more mainstream traction. As the music industry evolves, it will be fascinating to see how these trends take shape and influence the sounds of tomorrow.
