Big names in the UK music scene just got their due with the King’s New Year Honours. It’s a notable moment for the industry and those shaping its future.
The King’s New Year Honours List for 2026 has spotlighted significant figures in the UK music industry, recognizing their contributions to art and culture. Among the honorees are composers, performers, and leaders in music education and production.
Janet Fischer, the chief executive of Live Music Now, is awarded an MBE for her dedication to enhancing community engagement through music. Fischer, a former soprano herself, has focused on providing high-quality live music experiences, particularly in schools and healthcare environments. Sir Vernon Ellis, chair of Live Music Now, praised her efforts, stating, ‘This honour recognizes Janet’s dynamic leadership and the impact it’s having on thousands of lives across the UK.’ This recognition not only highlights Fischer’s work but also the vital role of music in social settings.
In addition to Fischer, conductor Richard Farnes and composer Max Richter both received CBEs. Richter’s honor coincides with the release of the historical drama ‘Hamnet,’ for which he composed the soundtrack, showcasing the intersection of film and music in contemporary culture.
Other notable honorees include Karen Emanuel, the founder of Key Production Group, who received an OBE for her contributions to physical music manufacturing. Matthew Jones, who leads National Youth Arts Wales, and Dr. Harjinder Singh Lallie, founder of the Gurmat Sangeet Academy, were also recognized with OBEs, emphasizing the importance of arts education on a national level.
Professor Michael Alcorn from Queen’s University in Belfast and music critic Richard Morrison both received MBEs, acknowledging their significant roles in music education and critique. In the north, other recipients included Allison McKay, CEO of Darlington’s Forum Music Centre, and Canon John Thomas Naylor, music director of Nantwich Choral Society, underscoring the breadth of music contributions across the UK.
Actor and singer Cynthia Erivo also received an MBE for her work in music and drama, alongside comedian Bill Bailey, who was honored for his contributions to entertainment. These accolades illustrate the diverse talent and commitment within the UK’s creative community.
