Singer-songwriter Janette Mata has been named the recipient of the prestigious 2025 peermusic Latin Music Award, honoring her original composition, “Triste Despedida.” The annual award, established in 2003 by peermusic CEO Ralph Peer II, celebrates young Latin music songwriters and composers. Mata’s heartfelt ballad earned her the $5,000 prize, marking a significant milestone in her musical journey.
The peermusic Latin Music Award recognizes excellence in Latin music across various genres, offering not only a monetary prize but also a platform for emerging talent to gain exposure. In 2023, as part of the 20th anniversary celebration, Venezuelan singer-songwriter and producer Jorge Luis Chacín was announced as the award’s spokesperson. Chacín has taken on the role of providing 1:1 artistic mentorship to future awardees.
In a statement, Chacín praised Mata’s artistry, saying, “Music always finds new voices to continue telling the story of our humanity. We celebrate Janette Mata, a singer-songwriter of extraordinary talent, whose art makes her a deserving recipient of this year’s scholarship.”
Over the years, the award has recognized 21 talented songwriters who have gone on to build successful careers in film scoring, songwriting, acting, and performing. Past honorees include notable figures such as singer/actor Mane de la Parra and songwriter Daniela Blau. Past judges and spokespersons include high-profile figures in the Latin music world, including Juanes, Chayanne, and Prince Royce, as well as a distinguished list of musicians, producers, and composers such as Kike Santander and Daniel Freiberg.
