Independent Music Coalition Backs Ticketing Law Reform

A coalition representing independent music and live entertainment professionals has reached out to the Senate, advocating for significant enhancements to the TICKET Act. This initiative, spearheaded by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), aims to address ongoing issues within the ticketing landscape that have been detrimental to fans and artists alike.

In a letter directed to key members of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, the Fix the Tix Coalition outlined several critical recommendations for improving the current legislation. This outreach follows a recent hearing held on January 28, where lawmakers, artists, and representatives from various ticketing platforms discussed the pressing challenges facing the live event ticketing market.

During the hearing, participants from both sides of the aisle acknowledged the prevalence of deceptive practices such as speculative ticketing, exorbitant fees, and price gouging, all of which have contributed to a decline in consumer trust. The coalition’s letter emphasized that these issues are not merely the result of rising prices set by artists or venues, but rather a consequence of unregulated resale markets that allow for excessive markups.

The coalition’s proposed changes to the TICKET Act include three main points: first, mandating comprehensive price transparency throughout the ticket purchasing process; second, implementing a total ban on speculative ticketing practices; and third, capping resale prices and fees to prevent inflated costs. These measures are designed to protect consumers and ensure that they have access to fair pricing when purchasing tickets.

As the coalition pointed out, the current iteration of the TICKET Act, while a step in the right direction, falls short without stricter regulations on resale practices and clearer pricing guidelines. The Fix the Tix Coalition, which includes a diverse range of organizations from the music industry, is committed to collaborating with the Senate to ensure that the final legislation effectively addresses these concerns and restores trust in the ticketing marketplace.
