Fraser T. Smith’s Remarkable Career Earns BMI’s Top Honor

Smith’s legacy spans three decades in the music industry, and he has played a pivotal role in shaping contemporary music. As a session guitarist in the 1990s, he contributed to over 200 records before meeting Craig David in 1999. His partnership with David blossomed into a series of successful albums, including Born to Do It, Slicker Than Your Average, and Trust Me. Smith has since worked with some of the most prominent names in music, from Gorillaz to Florence + The Machine, and Stormzy.

His impressive body of work includes seven UK No. 1 singles, two Billboard No. 1 singles, and 18 No. 1 albums. Along the way, Smith has garnered numerous accolades, including a GRAMMY Award in 2011 for his work on Adele’s 21 and a Latin GRAMMY for his collaboration with Jesse & Joy. In 2015, he received another GRAMMY nomination for his work on Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour. His achievements also earned him recognition at the MOBO Awards and a 2016 Mercury Prize shortlist.

Smith’s influence is felt not only through his collaborations with established artists but also through his solo work. Under the moniker Future Utopia, he released the highly praised 2020 album 12 Questions, featuring a stellar lineup of artists like Stormzy, Dave, and Bastille. In 2025, Future Utopia dropped new singles, including “Don’t Try This At Home” and “The Pleasure Trap,” continuing to push boundaries in the music world.

As part of the 2025 BMI London Awards, the event will also recognize the achievements of British and European songwriters who contributed to the most-performed songs in US streaming, radio, film, television, and visual media. Smith’s honor will be celebrated by BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill and EVP, Chief Creative & Revenue Officer Mike Steinberg.

Joining a prestigious list of past BMI President’s Award recipients, such as Taylor Swift, Pitbull, and Noel Gallagher, Fraser T. Smith’s remarkable contributions to the music industry will be officially recognized at this exclusive event.
