Doechii’s firing back at the haters with a powerful new track featuring SZA.
Doechii and SZA have teamed up once again, releasing their latest single titled “girl, get up.” on December 31. This collaboration marks the second time the two artists have worked together, following their successful partnership on Doechii’s 2022 hit, “Persuasive.” The new track comes with an engaging music video and confronts the rumors surrounding Doechii’s status in the music industry.
The term “industry plant” has been thrown around by various critics, including high-profile figures like Kanye West. This label implies that an artist has been artificially groomed for success by industry insiders rather than through genuine talent and hard work. In the second verse of “girl, get up.,” Doechii directly addresses these claims: “All that industry plant shit whack. Y’all can’t fathom that I worked this hard. And y’all can’t fathom that I earned this chart.” She emphasizes that her success is a result of her dedication and talent.
Over the past year, Doechii has seen a meteoric rise in her career. In 2024, she released the critically acclaimed album “Alligator Bites Never Heal,” which clinched the Grammy for Best Rap Album in 2025. This led to her sold-out nationwide tour, “Live from the Swamp Tour.” Additionally, she contributed to Tyler, the Creator’s hit track, “Balloon,” further solidifying her place in the industry.
This year, Doechii’s single “Anxiety” earned her five Grammy nominations, including prestigious categories like Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Despite her growing popularity, the narrative of her being an industry plant persists, fueled by comments from content creators and even Kanye West, who questioned her authenticity in a viral video.
Critics, including popular streamers, have echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that signing to a label often comes with questionable motives. However, Doechii’s devoted fanbase has quickly rallied to her defense, citing her extensive history in music and content creation. Supporters have drawn attention to her established YouTube channel, which she began in 2015, showcasing her long-standing commitment to her craft.
Fans have responded passionately, particularly regarding the accusations against Doechii. Many have pointed out the inappropriateness of white content creators commenting on a Black woman’s journey in the music industry. Creator LoLo Vonz stated, “Y’all have no place nor I feel like knowledge to be speaking on Black culture, let alone rap because Doechii is rap,” emphasizing that Doechii has been working hard for years.
“girl, get up.” is now available for streaming on all major platforms, and the music video, directed by James Mackel, showcases Doechii’s artistic vision and talent.
