Kay Young Returns with New Single The Way You Look At Me

 class=

Artist, rapper and producer Kay Young has made her return with a vibrant new single, “The Way You Look At Me”, the first teaser from her upcoming EP that sees her taking on new soundscapes.

“The Way You Look At Me” introduces fans to the duality of  Kay’s artistry, whilst still maintaining her signature sound with witty bars. Taking inspiration from the funk of the 60s and 70s and legendary bands such as The Mamas & The Papas, this Kay-produced single is a modern twist on falling in love on the dance floor.

Kay fills the instrumental with warmth, with its layers of lively drum patterns and show-stopping horns serving as a playful pair to her relaxed cadence. She uses it to tease as she builds up to the electrifying  chorus, using the swell of spirited jazz to bring the chorus to life. When married with her playful cadence, “The Way You Look At Me” has a sense of refinement. Kay Young is clearly here for a good time with her latest track, as she meets the familiarity of her personality with newfound musical confidence.

“The Way You Look At Me” gives a refreshing take on falling in love and sets the enticing and teasing tone from the outset. She invites her lover to have a dance with her, asking if they can keep up with her high-octane energy. Kay wants to “cause a scene” as they dance, her carefree and joyful attitude rings true through the track and invites the listener to be just as carefree too. Her feel-good lyrics play into the light-heartedness of the single as she flows with ease for the duration of the track.

“The Way You Look At Me” is Kay Young’s first original single since the 2021 EP This Here Feels Good. In 2022 Kay performed at The Great Escape and We Out Here, as well as opening for Jay Electronica, Masego and Corrine Bailey Rae. She featured on Blue Note’s second compilation album Re:Imagined II, breathing new life into Marlena Shaw’s “Feel Like Making Love” and shot straight up to A-list at Jazz FM.

Alongside this, she gave a star-studded performance of “White Teeth” on BBC 4’s Other Voices 20th Anniversary show and  has gained strong support from the likes of Chris Hawkins (6Music), Huw Stephens (6Music) and Jamz Supernova, recording a live session at Maida Vale for her BBC 1Xtra show.

In 2023 expect more new music and live shows including a performance at the Brick Lane Jazz Festival on April 16th, with more dates TBC.
