AI-Generated Music Labeling on Streaming Platforms

As the music industry continues to evolve, the rise of AI-generated music has become a significant phenomenon. Recent statistics indicate that AI-generated tracks now constitute nearly 40% of all music uploaded to streaming services daily. This surge has led to a growing presence of fully AI-generated artists, with some, such as Sienna Rose, gaining millions of monthly listeners on platforms like Spotify. Despite their popularity, many listeners remain unaware that these artists are entirely algorithmic creations rather than human musicians.

The implications of this trend extend beyond listener awareness. AI-generated music threatens to disrupt traditional revenue streams for human artists, with projections suggesting that AI artists could claim nearly 25% of human creators’ earnings by 2028. As streaming platforms generate revenue based on subscriber engagement, the influx of AI-generated content could diminish opportunities for human artists to gain traction in an already competitive landscape.

Concerns about the quality and originality of AI-generated music also emerge. While current outputs may lack the emotional depth and artistic significance inherent in human-created music, the sheer volume of AI-generated tracks presents a challenge. With AI capable of producing millions of songs daily, there is a risk that human-made music could become a minority on streaming platforms, potentially leading to a homogenization of musical offerings.

In response to these challenges, there is a pressing call for increased transparency from streaming services. Just as explicit content is labeled, AI-generated music should be clearly identified to inform listeners. While some platforms have begun to take actionsuch as Deezer’s decision to tag AI-generated songsothers, including Spotify and Apple Music, have yet to implement robust labeling systems. This lack of clarity could have lasting repercussions for the music industry, as the distinction between human and AI creators becomes increasingly blurred.
