This West Tennessee Music Census is a game changer for our local scene.
JACKSON, Tenn. � The state has officially launched the West Tennessee Music Census as part of a larger initiative to enhance the region�s music ecosystem. Covering 21 counties, this census aims to provide a thorough understanding of the area’s musical landscape, engaging various stakeholders from venues to musicians.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, the Tennessee Entertainment Commission, the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, and Visit Jackson, TN. This partnership seeks to gather vital information that can influence the future of music in the region.
�We�re looking to better understand the needs of venues, attractions, and artists,� said Beth Bolton, CEO of Visit Jackson, TN. �Music is a significant component of our local economy, contributing around $60 million across the state.�
Local artist Brandon Hutcheson, part of the Hutcheson Brothers Music, emphasized Jackson�s pivotal role in the regional music narrative, stating that it has shaped musical sounds that resonate through generations. �We�ve got a solid foundation here, but there�s always room for improvement. This effort is about uniting everyone�from state officials to local artists�to create better opportunities for both newcomers and seasoned veterans alike,� he noted.
Bolton further elaborated on the connection between music and tourism, highlighting how music can drive tourism and bolster economic development. �Music is tourism. It strengthens tourism and economic growth,� she explained.
The census results could potentially impact various sectors within the music industry, including education, policy-making, and community engagement. The goal is to gather in-depth insights that will inform strategies to enhance the music ecosystem by pinpointing its strengths, challenges, and areas for growth.
Musicians and aspiring artists are encouraged to engage with local businesses and open-mic events to hone their craft and promote their work. The West Tennessee music initiative, led by Visit Jackson, TN, is supported by B3 Creative and backed by funding from the Tennessee Entertainment Commission and the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. The University of Memphis Lambuth is providing administrative support for the census.
Additionally, civic organizations, media representatives, public sector companies, music educators, and arts organizations throughout the region are invited to take part in this important music census.
