UK Music Market Grows for 11th Year, Driven by Local Talent

The UK music market is on a winning streak, growing for the 11th year fueled by fresh local talent.

The UK’s recorded music market experienced a notable rise in 2025, marking its 11th consecutive year of growth, largely driven by the emergence of homegrown artists. The latest data from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), based on analysis from the Official Charts Company, revealed an overall consumption increase of 4.9 percent. The total consumption reached a staggering 210.3 million albums or their streaming equivalents.

For the first time in history, the music streaming market surpassed 200 billion streams, registering a total of 210.3 billion streams in 2025, which translates to a 5.5 percent rise from the previous year. Streaming now accounts for an impressive 89.3 percent of all music consumption. Meanwhile, vinyl sales continued their upward trajectory, marking an 18th consecutive year of growth, alongside a 1.4 percent increase in all physical formats.

While this year’s growth is substantial, it does fall short of the 9.7 percent surge recorded at the close of 2024. This year’s numbers owe much to the successful breakout of several British artists. Noteworthy among them are Lola Young, whose single ‘Messy’ became the second biggest song of the year, and Olivia Dean, who made history as the first female solo artist to achieve a Number One single and album simultaneously. Dean’s album, ‘The Art Of Loving’, was also named one of NME’s albums of the year, adding to her growing acclaim.

A total of 27 albums by British artists topped the UK Albums Chart in 2025, featuring talents like Sam Fender, Sleep Token, Yungblud, Wet Leg, Wolf Alice, and Biffy Clyro. Additionally, new artists such as Skye Newman, EsDeeKid, Chrystal, and Myles Smith found their songs climbing the UK Singles Chart.

Jo Twist, CEO of BPI, emphasized the significance of UK talent making waves both domestically and on the global stage, particularly in a competitive environment. She highlighted the achievements of artists like Olivia Dean and Lola Young, alongside enduring stars like Ed Sheeran, who continue to represent the UK’s rich musical diversity and talent pool. Twist also urged policymakers to prioritize the music sector in 2026, advocating for robust copyright protections and an environment that fosters direct licensing agreements between music and technology firms.

On the international front, Taylor Swift made history by becoming the first artist in decades to have the biggest album for two consecutive years with different albums. Her latest, ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’, achieved the highest first-week sales since Ed Sheeran’s ‘-‘ in 2017, totaling 642,000 sales for the year. Meanwhile, US singer-songwriter Alex Warren captured the biggest song of the year with ‘Ordinary’, and the blockbuster tours of bands like Oasis and Coldplay propelled their greatest hits albums up the charts.
