Apple Music and TikTok are currently engaged in a beta test of two new features aimed at enhancing the integration of music between their platforms. One of the key features being tested is called “Play Full Song,” which will enable TikTok users to stream full tracks from Apple Music directly within the TikTok app, utilizing Apple’s MusicKit framework. This feature requires users to have an active Apple Music subscription, and during playback, a “From Apple Music” label will be displayed. Apple will handle all royalty payments and licensing agreements associated with the music played.
In addition to the full song streaming feature, the companies are also testing a “Listening Party” functionality. This feature is designed to allow groups of TikTok users to stream music simultaneously, fostering a communal listening experience akin to the now-defunct Turntable.fm service. Both features are still in the testing phase and have not yet been publicly launched.
This partnership builds on the existing collaboration between Apple Music and TikTok, which has seen various integration features introduced over the past year. Notably, TikTok’s “Add to Music App” tool has facilitated the saving of over 3 billion tracks to various streaming services, including Apple Music, since its introduction. This surge in track saves has reportedly contributed to significant increases in streaming numbers and has played a role in shaping music charts globally.
The collaboration is particularly strategic for Apple Music, as it aims to connect with TikTok’s predominantly younger user base, many of whom may not subscribe to traditional music streaming services. As competition in the streaming landscape intensifies, this initiative represents Apple Music’s effort to enhance its market position against rivals like Spotify, which has seen growth in its subscriber base.
