Okmulgee Launches New Incentives to Attract Film Productions

The Oklahoma Film + Music Office (OF+MO) has announced the launch of a new film incentive program by the City of Okmulgee, marking a significant step in promoting the city as a prime location for film and television production. This initiative aims to bolster economic investment while solidifying Okmulgee’s reputation as a film-friendly community.

Okmulgee has already established itself as a filming destination, having hosted productions such as “Reservation Dogs” and “Sarah’s Oil.” With a variety of filming locations and its strategic proximity to Tulsa, the city is well-equipped to accommodate productions of all sizes and budgets. The new incentive program is designed to further enhance these capabilities.

John Neal, a member of the Okmulgee City Council, expressed his enthusiasm for the program, highlighting the economic and cultural benefits that the film industry can bring to the community. He noted that the incentive was developed through collaborative efforts among city leadership, local stakeholders, and Main Street, all of whom are committed to showcasing Okmulgee’s potential as a filming location. Neal emphasized that the program not only provides financial support to filmmakers but also fosters a welcoming environment for those looking to tell their stories in Okmulgee.

The incentive program offers a 10% sales tax rebate for qualifying productions that spend a minimum of $10,000 in the city. Additionally, productions can receive an extra 5% rebate by meeting specific criteria, such as hiring more than 50% of their crew from the local area and prominently featuring Okmulgee landmarks in their work. Productions can also benefit from reduced permit fees and additional location support, with no application deadlines currently in place.

Jeanette Stanton, Director of OF+MO, remarked on the growing film hub in Northeast Oklahoma and expressed excitement about Okmulgee’s new incentive, which complements existing state, local, and tribal film programs. This initiative positions Oklahoma as a leading destination for film and television production.
