In late 2023, the boards of Rhode Island PBS and The Public�s Radio officially merged their operations, culminating in the establishment of Ocean State Media in July 2025. The newly formed organization has streamlined its radio operations, which include five FM signals across Rhode Island and one AM station in Providence. As part of this integration, plans to acquire WVEI(FM) from Audacy are underway to enhance statewide coverage.
The merger necessitated relocating the radio operation from its previous location at Union Station in downtown Providence to the Rhode Island PBS studios, approximately four miles away. This transition involved constructing a new main studio and a multipurpose room, repurposing two existing audio production suites from the 1990s into modern radio studios.
The studio upgrade project included significant technological enhancements, such as the installation of air chain equipment in the RIPBS Master Control, integration of ENCO software, and hardware improvements. The project was managed by an experienced consultant, who oversaw the construction and network development, ensuring that the integration was completed within a tight three-week timeframe.
The new facilities utilize a Telos Livewire system, featuring Axia StudioCore engines and IQ consoles among other advanced equipment. This modernized setup allows for flexible use of the studios, accommodating both pre-recorded and live programming while maximizing the efficiency of the available space. The project also involved repurposing existing infrastructure, such as an abandoned TV satellite downlink, optimizing operational costs and enhancing service capabilities.
