NPR AND PEOPLE FEATURE KALIE SHORR AND HIGHLIGHT “ALICE IN WONDERLAND” AS FIRST SINGLE FROM DEBUT ALBUM OPEN BOOK

Taking listeners on a raw and emotional journey, Kalie Shorr chose “Alice in Wonderland” as the first single off of her debut album, Open Book. Shorr was recently featured in an interview with People, opening up about the tumultuous year that led to creating the project. Released Friday, the song has already been featured on The Boot’s New Country Songs You Need to Hear and on Whiskey Riff’s New Music Friday playlist. In September, it was lauded by NPR Music on their all-genre Top 20 Songs of September. The song encapsulates what it feels like to be in a relationship with someone that makes you feel small, coming from a real-life angle as the former lover speaking to the current. Kalie is able to portray that complex feeling into both the lyrics and her uniquely energetic, but calmly sustained vibe of the song. Check out her imaginative take on wonderland, along with the rest of her full-length project, here.

“A word to a gaslit girl from one who’s wisened up, this rocker is as gleefully mean as Avril Lavigne’s finest and as sisterly as something by the Dixie Chicks. Hot stuff from one of Nashville’s most promising.” — Ann Powers, NPR Music

“Listen to the music and it becomes clear that Shorr hasn’t sensationalized her heartbreak and grief. Instead, she’s expertly navigated it and turned it into something artful.” — Nancy Kruh, People

“This song started as a conversation on my living room floor with my best friend [Candi Carpenter] and before we realized it, we were writing a song; so it has that very conversational honesty to it. It’s exactly what I would say to the person it’s about if she was standing in front of me. Songs like that are what define Open Book for me. I realized after the album feedback on social media that this was a fan and critic favorite, and it’s also one of my personal favorites so it felt like an obvious single choice,” said Shorr.

This past year Kalie Shorr has been taking life by storm and prevailing with the recent release of her blazing album Open Book, an upcoming Christmas Tour opening for LeAnn Rimes, and with the addition to the lineup on the Jack Daniel’s Music City Midnight: New Year’s Eve in Nashville with Keith Urban, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, The Struts, Amanda Shires, Bren Joy and the Fisk Jubilee Singers. In regards to her recent album she has been continually impressing listeners, being mentioned in The New York Times, NPR, Rolling Stone, The Boot, and Taste of Country, amongst many others.

“One of the things I like about this record is it does have some of the raw tension that I would associate with a Miranda, but it also has some of these very, very crisp pop songwriting instincts that feel very post-Taylor [Swift], post-Kelsea Ballerini. This album is a knock to me… very, very into it.” – Jon Caramanica, The New York Times (via NYT Popcast, 10/11/19)
