A live music venue in Guernsey is preparing to reopen under new ownership. The Vault in St Peter Port, which closed in November due to the cost-of-living crisis and cultural shifts, will now continue operations thanks to a couple who has taken on ownership.
Assistant promoter Martin Welch, who holds the lease for the property, mentioned that they received multiple inquiries before finding new owners committed to supporting local music and artists. He remarked, ‘I’ve explained the music industry won’t make them a millionaire but it’s more of a lifestyle choice, and it’s awesome they want to support local music and artists.’
Welch expressed his excitement about the new ownership team, praising their dedication to improving the venue: ‘They’ve been handy with the paintbrush, and I love their new artwork… It’s very reflective.’
He emphasized that while this marks a new era for The Vault, the core mission of supporting local artists and the economy remains unchanged. The venue’s calendar is already filling up with upcoming events, including album launches and performances from UK bands and artists from Jersey.
‘We want to support everyone, that is what The Vault is about,’ Welch stated. He reminisced about the early days of the venue, where some bands would draw large crowds while others would not, but the focus was always on providing a platform for musicians.
Welch noted the need for social interaction and engagement, especially after a prolonged period spent indoors, highlighting the importance of live music for mental health and community wellbeing. He mentioned a decline in the nighttime economy and expressed the desire to give islanders a reason to venture out.
