Maren Morris on Country Music’s Political Divide

Country music artist Maren Morris has recently voiced her thoughts on the political landscape, particularly addressing supporters of former President Donald Trump. In a TikTok video shared on March 6, Morris expressed her discontent with those who voted for Trump, stating, “I don’t have forgiveness for the triple Trumpers or any of the Trumpers. You did vote for this. He is a dementia ridden, diaper clad, cornball, ex TV host … you voted for this and you got bamboozled.” This candid message reflects her ongoing engagement with political issues, a theme she has navigated throughout her career.

Morris has been open about the challenges she faces as a woman in the country music industry, particularly in light of her political beliefs. In a January TikTok, she mentioned that her decisions in the industry have been “very calculated,” especially since the release of her debut album, Hero, in 2016, which coincided with Trump’s election. She noted, “I was having, like, the best year of my life professionally, but I was also starting to see … everything felt very political, even though, like, no one cared that much before.” This intersection of her career and political climate has shaped her perspective as an artist.

Over the past decade, Morris has witnessed the country music scene become increasingly politicized. She shared her experiences navigating this environment, stating, “It’s been quite interesting to see the country music space become very politicized.” Despite her love for country music and her Texas roots, she has found the atmosphere challenging, particularly at award shows, which she described as “very heated.” Morris has chosen to step back from certain industry events, indicating that the political climate has affected her relationships within the genre.

While acknowledging that she has lost fans due to her outspoken views, Morris remains committed to her beliefs. She stated, “If you don’t agree with me, you can’t enjoy my music because of my viewpoints, you’re absolutely allowed to do that.” Her willingness to sacrifice popularity for authenticity underscores her dedication to her art and the messages she conveys through her music. Morris continues to advocate for her perspective, emphasizing the importance of reflecting reality in songwriting, even when it leads to division among her audience.
