LANDR’s just made a power move by acquiring Reason Studios, shaking up the DAW scene.
Montreal-based LANDR, known for its AI-driven music production capabilities, has officially acquired Stockholm’s Reason Studios for an undisclosed sum. This strategic move aims to integrate LANDR’s advanced production tools with Reason’s renowned digital audio workstation (DAW) and its iconic Reason Rack, which is celebrated for its modular design and distinctive sound.
Under the new ownership, Reason Studios will maintain its brand identity and continue operating independently. Pascal Pilon, CEO of LANDR, shared the vision for this acquisition, emphasizing the goal of making Reason and its Rack system essential for producers across various platforms. “Wherever music is made, Reason will be there, with its amazing instruments, effects, and iconic analog workflow—enhanced by LANDR’s value-rich creator tools,” Pilon stated.
Founded in 2014, LANDR has attracted over 7 million users worldwide by offering a suite of tools and services that aid in music production, distribution, and monetization. In 2019, they successfully raised $26 million in a Series B funding round to further their mission. Additionally, LANDR owns Synchro Arts, the creators of the well-regarded VocAlign and Revoice Pro audio software products.
The acquisition also marks the end of Verdane’s majority stake in Reason Studios, which it held since 2017. Charlotte Möller, a director at Verdane, expressed pride in the collaboration over the years and noted the fit between Reason Studios and LANDR as a positive next step for the company’s growth.
In an effort to involve the user community, LANDR and Reason Studios plan to establish an Artist Council composed of producers who utilize Reason. This council will give those producers a direct say in product development, ensuring the tools remain relevant and beneficial. Daniel Rowland, VP of Strategy at LANDR, reflected on his long-standing admiration for Reason, stating, “This council makes that official, giving power users a direct voice in shaping the tools they rely on, benefitting all of us.” This initiative represents a commitment to keeping the community at the heart of Reason’s evolution.
Both teams will continue to operate from their respective locations in Montreal and Stockholm, focusing on their strengths. Pilon assured, “This isn’t about changing Reason; it’s about giving it room to grow. We’re preserving each brand’s identity and core market while unlocking new possibilities for creators everywhere.” The acquisition comes at a time when the DAW market is facing increased competition, particularly from AI-focused companies like Suno, which recently entered the arena with a new DAW tailored for professionals and aspiring artists alike. As the industry evolves, LANDR’s acquisition of Reason Studios is set to make waves in the music production community.
