Looks like UMG’s set to ramp up its strategic comms game with a big hire from Warner.
Universal Music Group has brought on board James Steven as its new executive vice president and chief communications officer. A seasoned veteran in the music industry, Steven previously held the same title at Warner Music Group for a decade, where he made a significant impact during a dynamic era for the company.
Steven’s tenure at Warner spanned 19 years, starting in London before transitioning to New York. He will now oversee both internal and external communications for UMG, as well as the communication strategies for its operating companies worldwide. His new role will begin on January 26, and he’ll report to Will Tanous, UMG’s chief administrative officer and his former boss at Warner Music.
Tanous praised Steven’s talents, noting his exceptional skill in strategic communications and storytelling. He emphasized that Steven’s passion for music combined with his extensive background across media and technology make him a perfect fit for UMG’s ambitions as it gears up for its next growth phase. This phase aims to unlock new opportunities for artists, songwriters, and fans alike.
Sir Lucian Grainge, UMG’s Chairman and CEO, echoed Tanous’s sentiments, expressing confidence in Steven’s ability to contribute positively to the company. Grainge pointed out the necessity of bringing in someone with Steven’s experience and perspective to ensure continuity as the company evolves under a broader corporate strategy.
During his time at Warner, Steven played a key role in guiding the company through landmark moments, including its successful IPO in 2020 and a CEO transition in 2022. Outside of his work at Warner, he is also a board member of the Recording Industry Association of America, showcasing his commitment to the industry at large.
Before joining Warner Music Group in 2007, Steven held senior positions at various public relations firms, catering to clients across diverse sectors like technology, entertainment, automotive, and food. His extensive background positions him well for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead at UMG.
