On Valentine’s Day, students and alumni from the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts at Florida International University (FIU) took the stage at Radio City Music Hall in New York City as part of the Yandel Sinfónico tour. This collaboration with renowned Latin music artists Yandel and J Balvin marked a significant achievement for the students, showcasing their talents in a high-profile venue.
The Yandel Sinfónico tour is a groundbreaking project that fuses reggaeton with orchestral elements, earning a Grammy nomination for its innovative approach. Under the direction of conductor Javier Mendoza, who has a history of collaboration with Yandel, the FIU Symphony Orchestra performed alongside students, providing them with invaluable real-world experience in a genre that transcends traditional boundaries.
Students involved in the performance highlighted the unique learning opportunities presented by the project. For many, it offered a glimpse into the production side of music, including aspects like staging, lighting, and sound design. The experience was instrumental in broadening their artistic perspectives and enhancing their versatility as musicians.
The collaboration not only allowed students to perform at an iconic venue but also facilitated networking opportunities within the music industry. Alumni returned to join the ensemble, contributing to the project’s success and emphasizing the importance of real-world experiences in music education.
