We recently had the pleasure of chatting with Marnie Glum, a talented artist hailing from York and currently based in Leeds. Marnie credits her mother, a classical musician and teacher, for her early exposure to music, although she has gravitated towards stringed instruments. Her passion for music has flourished in Leeds, a city known for its vibrant live music scene and a plethora of venues that foster emerging talent.

Marnie expressed her admiration for the local music community, highlighting artists like Rail Replacement Bus Service, Kindelan, and Zoe Cure, who are all making significant contributions to the scene. She feels fortunate to collaborate with such innovative musicians and appreciates the high standard of music-making in the area. Recently, she released her new single, “Iron Out,” which she describes as an ode to awkwardness and the struggle of fitting in. The song, produced by Chris Hyson, captures the essence of subtlety and nuance, reflecting Marnie’s artistic vision.

The accompanying music video, crafted with friends Lizzie Farrell and George Hall, uses shadows to explore themes of belonging and the shapes we take on in our attempts to fit in, culminating in a hopeful narrative. Marnie is excited about this release, which is part one of a dual release, with the second part, “Fairweather,” set to drop in April. She considers “Fairweather” a crowd favorite and is eager to share it with her audience.

Discussing the recording process, Marnie described it as a dream collaboration with Chris Hyson, with plans for a second EP already in the works. She aims to capture the intimate sound of records she admires, ensuring that the emotional depth of her music resonates with listeners. However, she acknowledges the challenges artists face in the current music industry, particularly regarding financial disparities that affect who can succeed in the field. Marnie is grateful for organizations like Help Musicians and Youth Music, which have supported her journey.

As for the future, Marnie is gearing up for a busy year filled with new music, solo gigs across the UK, and performances with her band at festivals. She encourages fans to stay connected through her mailing list, emphasizing the importance of direct communication in an age where social media can be overwhelming. Marnie’s passion for music and her commitment to authenticity shine through in her work, making her an artist to watch in the coming years.
