ESNS Festival to Celebrate 40 Years of European Music Talent

Big anniversary coming up! ESNS is set to showcase the best European talent and tackle industry challenges as it celebrates 40 years.

The Eurosonic Noorderslag (ESNS) festival is gearing up for an exciting edition in 2026, marking its 40th anniversary. Set in Groningen, Netherlands from January 14-17, this annual event has evolved from a simple battle of the bands for Dutch acts into a cornerstone of the European music calendar. Every January, the festival draws representatives from all sectors of the music industry – including labels, streaming services, and live agents – who gather to exchange ideas and anticipate trends that will influence the region’s music scene in the coming months.

As ESNS celebrates this milestone, its focus remains on the current state of the music industry. The conference programming is set to provide critical insights into Europe’s positioning in the global music market, aiming to discuss strategies for maintaining its status as the second-largest music market after North America. With fresh competition emerging from Latin America and Southeast Asia, the local industry is responding with determination. The ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the war in Ukraine, are expected to shape discussions at the festival.

Emerging talent from various European nations will take center stage at ESNS. Acts will perform in front of talent agents and bookers who are instrumental in shaping festival lineups for the upcoming summer. This platform not only highlights diverse artistic expressions but also reflects the rich cultural tapestry of the continent. The festival has planned several celebrations, including an exhibition titled “Then and Now,” showcasing past performers such as The White Stripes, Fontaines D.C., and Robyn. A unique initiative called Popwalk will guide attendees through Groningen’s musical heritage, featuring landmarks associated with legendary artists like The Cure and David Bowie.

The festival’s theme, House of Europe, comes at a significant moment, emphasizing unity and collaboration among nations amid a politically charged atmosphere. ESNS aims to promote the benefits of cross-border cooperation, which could be vital for the regional industry. A key panel titled “Solidarity, Unity and Cooperation: Festivals Fighting for Survival” will feature industry leaders discussing how festivals can thrive under challenging political regimes.

One of the rising stars to watch is Dove Ellis, whose debut LP Blizzard has captivated critics in the U.K. and Ireland. Although he tends to keep a low profile, his first performance of 2026 at ESNS will be highly anticipated following a successful tour in the U.S. Meanwhile, the festival will also host prominent industry figures, including Emma Banks from CAA and Simon Raymonde of Bella Union, who will share their insights on the evolving music landscape.

With its rich programming and an impressive lineup of speakers and artists, ESNS 2026 is poised to make a significant impact as it celebrates four decades of music.
