China Expands Tibetan Radio Amid Information Control

The Chinese government is intensifying its efforts to expand Tibetan-language radio broadcasting within the Tibet Autonomous Region. This initiative comes at a time when access for external journalists is becoming increasingly restricted, complicating the landscape for independent reporting and information dissemination.

China National Radio has significantly increased its programming, expanding from a single show to 17 segments in just a few months. This expansion is also reflected in the global shortwave allocations managed by the High Frequency Coordination Conference, indicating a strategic move to enhance state media presence in the region.

Simultaneously, there has been a notable decline in Tibetan-language content from international media outlets such as Radio Free Asia and Voice of America. These platforms have traditionally provided critical coverage on human rights, religion, and social issues in Tibet. The diminishing presence of these independent voices raises concerns about the dominance of state narratives that often align with Communist Party ideologies.

In addition to radio, China is also reinforcing its control over television broadcasting, limiting private media operations while promoting state-controlled channels across all counties. These developments highlight the government’s overarching goal of establishing comprehensive narrative control in a region characterized by restricted access to diverse media sources.
