Leadership Change at WDIV-Local 4
Bob Ellis, a prominent figure in local television for several years, has stepped down from his role as Vice President and General Manager of WDIV-4 in Detroit. His resignation marks a significant transition for the long-standing NBC affiliate, part of the Graham Media Group. The news broke late Thursday, with Ellis’s departure confirmed by the CEO of Graham Media Group, Catherine Badalamente.
Ellis has been at the helm since October 2021 and expressed in a staff memo that he believes it’s time for him to explore new opportunities while allowing fresh leadership to guide the station into its next phase. Badalamente will temporarily oversee WDIV during this transition.
The timing of Ellis’s exit comes as the station is navigating changes in on-air talent, including notable personalities like Devin Scillian and Paula Tutman. Recently, the station also concluded its segment “Help Me Hank,” which had been popular among viewers, amid past allegations regarding improprieties that were later cleared.
In his farewell message, Ellis reflected on his tenure, stating, “Serving as GM has been an extraordinary privilege. I am deeply proud of the work we have accomplished together, strengthening our journalism, and serving the Detroit community with great purpose.” He expressed confidence in the remaining team and their ability to continue thriving under new management.
There are rumors surrounding Ellis’s departure, suggesting that personal relationship matters may have played a role in his decision, although these claims have not been independently verified. Regardless, his exit is notable given WDIV-TV’s stronghold in the Detroit market, known for its community-focused programming and events like America’s Thanksgiving Parade.
Ellis’s leadership was instrumental in establishing the “Expect More” brand which encapsulates the station’s commitment to the Detroit area. He also spearheaded the launch of the Local4+ streaming app and initiated the “Trade Up” project, aimed at highlighting trade careers in the community. Prior to his role at WDIV, Ellis served as VP/GM for WCWJ-TV and WJXT-TV in Jacksonville and has a long history in television, beginning his career as a producer while attending Michigan State University.
