READY MR MUSIC: dj Mike Nielson is celebrating his 10th anniversary with Blue Light Discos.
MORE than 4000 watts of sound power, strobes, lasers and 1100 cubic metres of smoke machine effects surround Mike Nielsen each time he goes to work.
Stepping into the dj scene while still in high school was a dream come true for Mike.
It all started in Year 11 in 2001 when his sister’s friend was working for Darryl Hayden, from Capital Video Roadshow.
Mike was allowed to tag along and help out, not knowing what was in store for him.
“I always wanted to do radio or be a dj because I love music and entertaining people,” Mike said.
Soon after starting full-time, he bought Capital Video Roadshow as Darryl stepped away from the business, leaving Mike to do the gigs on his own.
“I still remember my first gig ““ don’t think I could ever forget that,” Mike said.
“Now I dj at schools all over the Coast for different events.
“I specialise in kids’ school discos and Blue Light Discos.”
Next Friday at the Nambour Blue Light Disco marks his 10-year anniversary.
“The Nambour Blue Light was the first one I took over by myself,” Mike said.
“It was very nerve-wracking and there were a few stuff-ups, but it went well.”
Mike has had the pleasure of working with celebrities like Joe Dulce, Denise Drysdale, Johnny Young, Olympians and stars from Channel 7’s Home and Away.
“I would like to travel with it and go in to smaller communities where they don’t have this sort of thing and give them that,” he said.
During the day, Mike works at the Karaoke Mega Store on Sugar Road, Maroochydore, but by night he is the man behind the music.
He hopes his current training with radio station Hot 91 may be his stepping stone into the radio industry.
But for now, you can see him at all the Maroochydore, Nambour and Cooroy Blue Light Discos.
Sunshine Coast under-15s are welcome to join Mike this week at the Nambour Blue Light Disco in Hungerford Hall at Nambour State High School.
The music starts at 6.30pm and finishes at 9.30pm.
Entry is $8 at the door.
