JAKARTA – Bandcamp, the global music distribution platform, has made a significant move by banning all music content created by artificial intelligence (AI). This decision underscores the company’s commitment to preserving the integrity of independent musicians and the creative community that forms the backbone of its platform.
In a recent official announcement, Bandcamp’s management articulated that the policy stems from a deep appreciation for the creativity and human passion that artists bring to their work. The platform aims to maintain a community of real people who produce remarkable music, and they seek to protect this ecosystem from the influx of generative content.
According to Bandcamp, “Today we are strengthening our mission by articulating our policy on generative AI, so that musicians can continue to make music, and fans can trust that the music on Bandcamp is human-created,” the statement read on Thursday, January 15.
The new regulations impose a strict ban on music and audio that is produced entirely or predominantly by AI. Additionally, the use of AI tools to mimic the identity of other artists or specific musical genres is also prohibited. This policy aligns with the company’s existing rules against identity impersonation and violations of intellectual property rights.
Bandcamp encourages its users to actively monitor content and report any music or audio suspected of being entirely or largely generated by AI through the provided reporting feature. “If you find music or audio that appears to be entirely or heavily reliant on generative AI, please use our reporting tool to flag the content for our team to review. We reserve the right to remove any music suspected of being generated by AI,” the company stated.
Furthermore, Bandcamp reserves the right to delete any music based on suspicions that it was produced by a machine. This move is particularly relevant given the rising controversy surrounding AI’s role in the music industry.
For context, streaming service Deezer reported in July of last year that about 28 percent of music uploaded to its platform was entirely generated by AI, raising significant concerns about originality and copyright. With this policy, Bandcamp positions itself as a platform that values human creativity amid the growing trend of art automation, aiming to protect original creators from intellectual infringement and the devaluation of artistic works due to generative AI technology.
