Radio programmers and rights holders are watching a rare growth story in terrestrial radio as John Clay Wolfe more than doubles his national syndication reach through a new multiyear agreement with iHeartMedia. This expansion signals strong demand for personality-driven automotive entertainment that bypasses traditional format constraints, offering a bright spot for a sector facing consolidation and cutbacks.
Unprecedented Distribution Growth
Beginning July 11, The John Clay Wolfe Show will air on 116 iHeartMedia stations nationwide, a significant jump from its previous 55 affiliates. The deal moves the program’s distribution from Cumulus Media’s Westwood One to iHeart’s Premiere Networks, marking the Fort Worth-based host’s largest national distribution to date. The expansion includes major-market stations such as WAXQ-FM in New York, KYSR-FM in Los Angeles, KOSF-FM in San Francisco, and KZPS-FM in Dallas. The four-hour Saturday morning program will continue its live, interactive simulcast on YouTube alongside the expanded radio rollout.
Authenticity Over Format
Wolfe credits the show’s 20-year longevity to a focus on entertainment rather than fitting into a traditional radio format. “For 20 years we’ve never tried to fit into a radio format,” Wolfe said. “We’ve simply tried to make people laugh. The cars brought people to the show, but the stories, characters, the guests and the friendships are what kept them coming back every Saturday.” The program blends automotive expertise with comedy, featuring live car buying, listener calls, vehicle market analysis, and celebrity interviews. Wolfe regularly purchases vehicles live on the air while mixing practical automotive advice with humor and unscripted conversations.
Eddie Martiny, Division President for iHeartMedia, stated that the expanded partnership reflects the show’s growing popularity. “John Clay Wolfe has built one of the most entertaining and engaging programs in radio, and we’re excited to expand his reach across our platform,” Martiny said. One of the show’s first major broadcasts under the new agreement will originate July 25 from Jay Leno’s Garage, with Jay Leno appearing as a special guest. While financial terms of the multiyear deal were not disclosed, the move to nearly 120 stations stands as a testament to the strength of the show and the shared commitment to delivering compelling programming.
