Ocean State Media Completes Strategic Facility Integration

In late 2023, the boards of directors of Rhode Island PBS and The Publics Radio voted to merge their operations, culminating in the formation of Ocean State Media in July 2025. This merger includes a significant consolidation of radio operations, which now broadcasts across five FM signals and one AM signal throughout Rhode Island. An impending acquisition of WVEI(FM) from Audacy is set to expand coverage further.

The merger necessitated a relocation of the radio operations from Union Station in Providence to the Rhode Island PBS studios. This transition involved the construction of a new main studio and a multipurpose room, as well as the transformation of two TV audio production suites from the 1990s into functional radio studios. The project also included the installation of essential equipment within the existing Master Control at RIPBS.

Under the management of a contracted project manager, the integration was completed within a tight three-week timeframe. The studio was designed with an emphasis on functionality over aesthetics, utilizing a modern AoIP facility that maximizes flexibility while minimizing costs and space constraints. The technical infrastructure includes a Telos Livewire system, Axia StudioCore engines, and various codecs and consoles, facilitating seamless audio routing and automation.

Ocean State Media’s new setup also benefits from enhanced connectivity to its transmitter sites, utilizing advanced IP link technology for audio transmission. The repurposing of an abandoned satellite downlink dish at the studios for NPR content has further optimized operational efficiency. As public media continues to evolve, the successful merger of these two organizations serves as a model for future collaborations within the industry.
