L.A. Reid Settles Sexual Assault Claims

L.A. Reid just wrapped up a legal battle with a former executive, settling claims of sexual assault that threatened to overshadow his legacy.

In a significant turn of events, renowned music producer Antonio “L.A.” Reid reached a settlement on Monday with Drew Dixon, a former record company executive who accused him of sexual assault in a lawsuit. The details of the settlement remain undisclosed, but both parties seem to be looking ahead following the agreement.

Outside the courthouse, Dixon appeared elated alongside her family and legal team, expressing her eagerness to return to her music career. She described the legal proceedings as a challenging journey, while her mother, Sharon Pratt, a former mayor of Washington, D.C., characterized it as an “excruciating journey.” Dixon’s attorney, Kenya Davis, indicated that the settlement empowers her client to pursue her creative endeavors freely, while also reaffirming her reputation in the music industry.

Reid’s lawyer, Imran H. Ansari, acknowledged the resolution, clarifying that Reid did not admit any liability in the matter. Dixon’s allegations date back to 2001 when she claimed Reid sexually assaulted her twice while she was working under him as chief executive at Arista Records. Following her rejections of his advances, she alleged that her career growth was stifled, claiming a drastic decrease in her budget and a sidelining of artists she was managing.

Reid, a ten-time Grammy nominee and three-time winner, has had a storied career, co-founding LaFace Records that produced numerous hits in the ’90s from artists like Boyz II Men and Outkast. He also helmed major labels such as Arista, Island Def Jam, and Sony’s Epic Records, influencing the careers of prominent figures like Usher and Mariah Carey.

The lawsuit settlement was reached just as jury selection was set to begin for the trial over Dixon’s claims. Dixon, who publicly shared her allegations in 2017 and later featured in the documentary “On the Record,” has also accused Russell Simmons of rape, a claim he denies, and is involved in a pending defamation lawsuit against him.

The lawsuit against Reid was filed in 2023 under New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which allowed survivors of sexual abuse a window to file claims regardless of the statute of limitations. Dixon hopes her advocacy for this act can lead to a safer music industry for all. “In a world where good news is often hard to find, I hope that survivors today see a ray of light peeking through the clouds,” she stated, reflecting her commitment to continuing her work in music and advocacy.

Dixon concluded with a statement about her ongoing passion for music, noting that despite focusing on advocacy in recent years, she remains dedicated to carving out her place in the industry with big ideas for the future, driven by creativity and integrity.
