Teyana Taylor Transitions from Music to Acting in Bold Move

Teyana Taylor’s Bold Leap into Acting

Teyana Taylor’s journey with One Battle After Another has been anything but conventional. In a recent chat with Oscar Isaac for an Actors on Actors series, she opened up about the suffocating nature of the music industry and how close she came to walking away for good.

“I had just retired from music and was like, ‘I want to pour into everything else that I love. I don’t want to be stuck in one box,'” Taylor explained, reflecting on the fears and doubts that came with her decision. “Everybody said, ‘We don’t think that’s smart.’ But I took that leap of faith, scared as hell. I knew I had to walk this faith journey. And not even a month after retiring, this role lands in my lap — nothing but God. I had a point to prove; I had work to do.”

And she wasn’t just taking a gamble on herself. This time around, Taylor is keeping creative control over her music catalog through a groundbreaking partnership with a recording royalties investment firm. That’s a game-changer in an industry notorious for exploitation.

Collaborating with Legends

“I thought I was closing the door for good, and honestly, I was OK with that. I wasn’t going to let anyone back me into a corner anymore,” she stated. “It’s usually me against the whole room, but not this time.”

In One Battle After Another, Taylor plays Perfidia Beverly Hills alongside heavyweights like Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, and Sean Penn. She described her experience working with DiCaprio, whom she considers a friend but still sees as a legend in the industry.

“Leo and I have been buddies for a long time, but we never actually worked together before. When I’m on set, I don’t bring the personal into it. This isn’t just ‘Oh, that’s my homie.’ This is still Leonardo DiCaprio. I’m just little old me. So yeah, I was nervous,” she admitted. “But he has this way of mentoring that makes it feel like we’re equals. My job is to be present for my scene partners and my director, always on my A-game.”

Big Award Nominations Ahead

Teyana Taylor’s impressive performance has not gone unnoticed. She’s been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role at the 83rd annual Golden Globes, airing on January 11. It’s a recognition she earned through hard work and an unwavering commitment to her craft, both in music and now in film.

This is an example of what happens when you refuse to play by the industry’s outdated rules and instead carve your own path. Keep going, Teyana. For more about her journey, check out this link and remember to stay true to your vision.
