John Fogerty Wins 2025 BMI Troubadour Award

John Fogerty, the legendary frontman of Creedence Clearwater Revival and one of the most influential songwriters in American music, will be honored with the 2025 BMI Troubadour Award this September in Nashville. The private ceremony, set for September 8 at BMI’s Music Row office, will recognize Fogerty’s six-decade impact on American songwriting and his continued influence on the global music scene.

Known for penning iconic songs like “Proud Mary,” “Fortunate Son,” “Born on the Bayou,” and “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” Fogerty crafted a unique sound that fused blues, country, swamp rock, R&B, and rockabilly. His songwriting helped define the American music identity and soundtrack generations of listeners.

Clay Bradley, BMI’s VP of Creative in Nashville, called Fogerty’s music “unequivocally the sound of America,” citing his unforgettable melodies and enduring lyrics.

Fogerty’s career achievements are staggering. He’s a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the only musician ever recognized by the Baseball Hall of Fame for the anthemic “Centerfield.” His BMI career began in 2005 and includes honors such as being named a BMI Icon (2010), receiving the BMI Board of Directors Award (2023), and earning 13 BMI Million-Air certificates, with his songs collectively topping 64 million radio spins.

In recent years, Fogerty has returned to major stages including JazzFest, Glastonbury, and the Hollywood Bowl. He was also inducted at the American Music Honors (introduced by Bruce Springsteen) and joined Eric Church on a new NASCAR anthem for Prime Video.

A new album, Legacy, is due August 22. This 20-track release features freshly recorded versions of his greatest hits—marking the first time Fogerty owns the rights to his Creedence Clearwater Revival catalog. The album stands as a personal milestone and artistic reclaiming of his legacy.

The Troubadour Awards are known for their intimate, music-filled celebrations and often serve as a gathering point for the Americana community ahead of AMERICANAFEST. Past recipients include Lucinda Williams, John Prine, and Robert Earl Keen. This year’s ceremony is expected to include special performances and appearances from notable artists and friends.
