A recent report by Youth Music has raised critical issues regarding the experiences of young creatives in the music industry, particularly focusing on discrimination, unsafe working conditions, and inequitable pay. Titled Just the Way It Is?, the report is based on testimonies from 69 young individuals engaged in various facets of the music sector.
The findings indicate that a significant number of young creatives face alarming challenges, with 72% reporting unsafe working environments and 90% claiming to have been compensated unfairly while feeling unable to voice their concerns. The report underscores the disproportionate impact of these issues on women, LGBTQ+, disabled, global majority, and working-class creatives.
In addition to highlighting these systemic problems, the report also notes a shift towards greater awareness and activism among younger artists. A notable trend, referred to as ‘The Raye Effect’, reflects an increase in young creatives speaking out against industry malpractices following the actions of established artists who have taken a stand against exploitation.
In light of these findings, the report calls for urgent, collective action to address these pressing issues. It emphasizes the need for employers to ensure fair pay, transparency, and the establishment of safe workplace cultures. Furthermore, it encourages funders and policymakers to strengthen protections for young creatives, while also advising artists to understand their rights and report any misconduct.
