Reflecting on the last couple of years, we pay tribute to one of the most influential figures in journalism, Wesley Lowery. Since being named the 2014 Emerging Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), Lowery has continued to exhibit a commitment to high-quality journalism and balanced coverage of both the black community and society at large. His intelligence, passion, and work ethic have been evident in his pursuit of some of the most compelling stories of our time.
Wesley Lowery’s Journey
Wesley Lowery’s journey began as a political reporter at The Washington Post, primarily covering Congress. His immediate reporting and analysis for the web, as well as his contribution to general breaking news stories, landed his work in the print editions of the newspaper.
Lowery’s Past Work
Having previously worked as a general assignment and political reporter at The Boston Globe, and as a METPRO Reporting Fellow at The Los Angeles Times, Lowery’s reporting skills have been honed over time. His internships at The Globe, The Wall Street Journal, The Columbus Dispatch, and at The Detroit News have all contributed to his journalistic prowess.
Awards and Recognition
Lowery’s commitment and talent have not gone unrecognized. He was hailed as the embodiment of the qualities the NABJ envisioned when they created the Emerging Journalist of the Year Award. His work is an inspiration to many, and his byline is one that will not soon be forgotten.
NABJ Baby
Known as an “NABJ Baby,” Lowery reported at the 2008 Unity: Journalists of Color convention in Chicago, and at the NABJ Convention in Tampa, Florida. He also served as a member of NABJ’s Board of Directors as the national student representative.
Editor-in-chief at Ohio University
During his time at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, Lowery was editor-in-chief of The Post, the school newspaper, where he managed coverage of the university and of Athens County, Ohio, making him the second black editor in the paper’s 100-year history.
The NABJ is proud to honor Wesley Lowery as a past recipient of the Emerging Journalist of the Year Award and anticipates his continued career achievement. Lowery was honored along with NABJ’s other honorees at NABJ’s Salute to Excellence Gala on August 2, 2014 during NABJ’s 39th Annual Convention and Career Fair in Boston.
