Big names are joining forces to redefine music creation tools with AI.
Universal Music Group (UMG) is partnering with Splice, a music creation platform, to develop advanced AI-powered tools tailored for artists. This collaboration aims to enhance the capabilities available to musicians while ensuring respect for their intellectual property.
The two companies are working on a strategic plan to introduce commercial AI tools that align with the interests of the creative community. Central to this partnership is Splice’s existing suite of AI tools that prioritize ethical practices while providing high-quality creative resources. UMG artists will have input in the development process, playing a pivotal role in shaping the products that emerge from this collaboration.
Michael Nash, UMG’s Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We�re excited to form this alliance with Splice to promote the alignment of innovation and ethicality in addressing the interests of the creative community to leverage cutting-edge AI-enabled tools to further their artistic expression.” He emphasized the importance of working closely with Splice’s CEO, Kakul Srivastava, and her team.
Kakul Srivastava echoed the sentiment, highlighting Splice’s commitment to creating AI tools that fairly compensate creators. In June 2024, Splice, along with UMG and other industry representatives, endorsed the �Principles for Music Creation with AI.� This initiative outlines guidelines for the responsible use of AI in music, advocating for ethical and transparent AI technologies that enhance rather than replace human creativity.
Over the past year, Splice has integrated its AI tools within popular digital audio workstations like Ableton and Pro Tools. Their growing array of AI-native tools is designed to put artists in control of their work while promoting monetization and governance. Additionally, Splice�s acquisition of Spitfire Audio has broadened its reach among professional composers, reinforcing its reputation as a reliable platform for music creation.
