Currently serving a 20-year sentence in another state for producing child pornography and enticing a minor into sexual activity, R. Kelly is also appealing convictions from New York related to sex trafficking and racketeering.
His situation has taken a new turn with a recent lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court of Northern Illinois. This legal action accuses staff from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons of leaking confidential details about the R&B artist.
Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, has criticized the Bureau of Prisons for not safeguarding his information. The lawsuit, which also names blogger LaTasha Kebe or “Tasha K,” claims that Kelly’s personal and attorney-client communications were inappropriately monitored and disclosed, affecting his ability to defend himself.
Bonjean notes that this breach continues to impact Kelly’s trust in conversations, even with his own lawyers.
The complaint asserts that over 60 officers from the Bureau of Prisons accessed Kelly’s private information without authorization. The Bureau and the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago have not commented on the case, citing its pending status.
Kelly’s sisters, Lisa and Cassandra Kelly, expressed their disapproval of these privacy violations in a virtual discussion with ABC7. They criticized the monitoring of personal communications and called for changes in the judicial system. (source)
