Radio Legend Tom Joyner and His Memorable Broadcasts
Welcome to our retrospective blog post, where we go back in time and remember the highlights of the past couple of years in the music industry. In this special edition, we are revisiting the three-day Multicultural Heritage Festival that kicked off with the return of the “Fly Radio DJ” and friends of the legendary Tom Joyner Morning Show. Joyner, who is often referred to as “the hardest working man in radio”, along with his crew, J. Anthony Brown and Sybil Wilkes, broadcasted the syndicated radio show live from West Atlantic City. Let’s take a walk down memory lane and relive the moments of this iconic event.
The Tom Joyner Morning Show Broadcast
On June 1, Joyner, Brown, and Wilkes took their show on the road, broadcasting live from 6-11 a.m. from the studio at Bayport One in West Atlantic City. The syndicated radio program, first of its kind for an African-American host, was aired by WTTH 96.1, one of the early markets that featured Joyner’s show. As of today, the show is heard in 105 markets by more than 8 million listeners every day.
An Interview with Tom Joyner
In an interview, Joyner expressed his gratitude towards the markets that syndicated his show early on. He praised the formula of super-serving the community with laughter, entertainment, and empowering news, which he believes is the main reason for the success of his show. He emphasized that the show is as much fun to do as it sounds on the air, and that it feels like a family with J. being the crazy uncle and Sybil the know-it-all little sister.
The Multicultural Heritage Festival
After the radio broadcast, Joyner and his team headed to Surf Stadium for a listener party, where he also received a key to the city from Mayor Lorenzo Langford. The festival was filled with parades, a tribute to Black music, beach bashes, concerts, and more. It was a weekend full of culture, music, food, and style.
A Final Word
Reliving this iconic event reminds us of the power of radio and the influence of broadcasters like Tom Joyner. His dedication to his craft, his audience, and his community is truly inspiring. We look forward to seeing more memorable moments in the music industry in the coming years.
