    Incident Overview

The riff’s office released body camera footage showing the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey by a Springfield deputy. The video, which is graphic and difficult to watch, documents the moments leading up to and including the shooting inside Massey’s home.

    Deputies Respond to Intruder Report

The deputies were called to Massey’s property following a report of a possible intruder. The body cam footage shows them inspecting the property and taking special interest in a car with broken windows. They knocked on her door multiple times before Massey answered, mumbling something to the officer.

    Interaction with Deputies

The conversation between Massey and the deputies seemed to be concluding when they asked her about the car and noticed the stove was on. Massey went to the stove, where a pot of water was boiling.

    Fatal Turn of Events

The situation escalated quickly. Massey placed the pot down and raised her hands. The deputy then raised his weapon and shot her. Massey died from the gunshot wounds.

Massey’s father expressed his grief, stating he would never see or talk to his daughter again. Following the incident, the deputy, Sean Grayson, was arrested and determined by the state’s attorney that the shooting was unjustified. Grayson was fired from his job as a Sangamon County deputy and is currently in custody.
