The Folk Alliance International Conference took place from January 21st to 25th in the historic French Quarter of New Orleans, providing a multifaceted platform for music industry professionals and folk music enthusiasts. The conference is distinguished by its extensive networking opportunities, connecting artists, managers, agents, and venue operators. Unlike traditional music festivals, which typically feature a limited number of stages, FAI showcases hundreds of performances across multiple venues, enriching the experience for attendees.
The event featured a diverse array of programming, including enlightening panels that delved into various aspects of the music industry and folk traditions. Each evening, official showcases filled large conference rooms, followed by a vibrant array of private showcases in hotel rooms that continued late into the night. This unique structure allows participants to explore a wide range of performances and discover new talent, while also offering many artists the chance to perform multiple times.
The International Folk Music Awards kicked off the conference, recognizing exceptional contributions to the folk music genre. Notable winners included I’m With Her for Artist of the Year and Album of the Year, and Crys Matthews for Song of the Year. The theme of “Rise Up” resonated throughout the event, highlighting the political consciousness inherent in folk music, especially in light of recent events that prompted communal expressions of mourning and resilience.
Daytime activities included a variety of panels on topics ranging from Indigenous folk traditions to the future of folk radio, alongside a legal summit aimed at equipping artists and legal professionals with essential industry knowledge. Showcase performances featured an impressive lineup of artists, including renowned names and emerging talent, further solidifying FAI’s reputation as a premier event for folk music.
The late-night atmosphere was characterized by an abundance of private showcases, providing an intimate setting for fans to engage with artists in a unique manner. The conference underscored the global nature of folk music, with performances that showcased its diverse cultural roots. Folk Alliance International is more than a conference; it is a celebration of community and the enduring power of music.
