Drexel University’s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design has launched a unique initiative within its Music Industry program, integrating live music performances into the halftime shows of its basketball games at the Daskalakis Athletic Center (DAC). This initiative is part of the “Live Music II” experiential learning course, where students are tasked with the entire production process, from artist booking to live execution, across seven game nights.
The course is structured to simulate real-world industry conditions, with students divided into teams, each responsible for managing a single show. This approach allows students to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment, learning to navigate the complexities of live sports production, including technical requirements and logistical coordination.
Collaboration with Drexel Athletics has been essential to the project’s success, helping to establish a framework that activates the DAC as a vibrant hub for campus life. Initial discussions with athletics leadership led to the identification of game dates and logistical support, which has been crucial in ensuring a seamless integration of live music into the athletic schedule.
As the series progresses, the feedback from both Drexel Athletics and fans has been positive, indicating a successful merging of sports and live music. The initiative not only enhances the game-day experience but also serves as a significant educational opportunity for students, preparing them for future careers in the live production industry.
