I knew radio news was in trouble when the story about DJ Envy admitting that his wife had to teach him how to properly wash his ass went viral this week. Completely overshadowing the news of Charlamagne getting a star on the Hollywood walk of fame? Why is this even a story? And did he at least share what Gia taught him so other grown men could benefit from this revolutionary concept?
At that moment, I thought: There is just no more radio news. Even in this economy, I have no choice but to hand in my resignation. Is there a support group? I don’t know.. perhaps a 12-step program for people like me who used to report radio ratings, format changes, executive appointments, layoffs, and those simultaneous and contradictory “radio-is-still-winning” press releases?
Is properly washing one’s ass now more newsworthy than new AI tools to cut your work day in half or the escalating price of Cap’n Crunch? Some of the biggest stories over the past few weeks have come directly from radio personalities, but not because of their shows, guests, or ratings. Because of controversy. Actually, I love it, it’s more entertaining, more honest and funny as hell.
