Buffalo Radio Legend Thelka McCall Passes

width=AllRadioNews is sad to report the passing of a Buffalo radio legend, Thelka McCall who died suddenly in her home last week. She was 81. She was heard on WUFO-AM radio for decades. McCall’s son, Dwayne Dancer Dunovant said his mother “was always the voice for somebody else.” McCall hosted Gospel and Community shows on WUFO-AM for several decades.

Buffalo has always been regarded as one of the groundbreaking markets for the best urban radio Radio DJs in the country. In the early 1960’s and 70’s, McCall was surrounded by radio personalities who went on to national fame, including Frankie Crocker, Gary Byrd and Gerry Bledsoe. “She was everybody’s mom. In this industry you are so transient that you pick up families and my mom would feed you, she’d give you advice, she’d make sure she opened doors for you so that if you were new to the city, you’d get a chance to meet the right kind of people.”
