Ocean State Media: Strategic Merger & Upgrade

In late 2023, Rhode Island PBS and The Public’s Radio finalized a merger, subsequently rebranding as Ocean State Media in July 2025. This consolidation aims to enhance service delivery across the state, utilizing five FM signals and one AM signal, with plans to expand coverage through the acquisition of WVEI(FM) from Audacy.

The merger prompted a relocation of the radio operation from Union Station to the Rhode Island PBS studios, requiring significant renovations to convert existing television production suites into functional radio studios. This involved the construction of a new main studio and a multipurpose room for editing and backup, alongside the installation of new technology and infrastructure.

Key features of the new facility include a Telos Livewire system and Axia StudioCore engines, which facilitate a modern AoIP architecture. The compact studio design allows for versatile use of space, accommodating both pre-recorded and live programming without the need for separate tracking booths. The integration was executed by Inrush Broadcast Services under the guidance of an experienced project manager.

The project also repurposed existing infrastructure, including an abandoned satellite downlink dish, optimizing resources and reducing costs. With a focus on operational efficiency and flexibility, Ocean State Media is positioned to better serve its audience while addressing the evolving challenges facing public media.
