Whitefish’s Ethan Thompson is back in town, ready to foster creativity at NVMS.
After spending over a decade in Los Angeles, Ethan Thompson, a Whitefish native, is returning to his roots to assist aspiring musicians at the North Valley Music School (NVMS). With his extensive experience and passion for music, Thompson is determined to create a nurturing environment for budding artists in his hometown.
Thompson’s journey began at Berklee College of Music, where he honed his craft before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an artist and producer. His career highlights include writing credits on several Billboard charting hits, performing with his band, Ocean Park Standoff, and launching a solo career under the name Alt Bloom. In his time in the industry, he’s collaborated with Grammy-winning producers and toured with notable acts like Lukas Graham, Andy Grammer, and OneRepublic, accumulating over 700 million streams along the way.
Reflecting on the changes within the music industry during his career, Thompson noted how the demand for instant gratification and the rise of social media have reshaped the landscape. He described the current climate as “night and day” compared to when he first started. This shift has led him to reevaluate his priorities, especially after he recently married and decided to settle down in Whitefish to start a family.
Thompson expressed a deep connection to the Flathead Valley, saying it had always been his dream to return and establish roots there. Now, as he embarks on a new chapter in his musical journey, he aims to give back to the community that inspired him.
Starting this winter, he’ll lead production and songwriting classes at NVMS, where students will gain practical experience in music creation from the ground up. Deidre Corson, the executive director of the music school, emphasized the significance of Thompson’s return, highlighting how his expertise and commitment to creative development will be invaluable to students and the community.
The music school, which recently opened an impressive new facility, holds a special place in Thompson’s heart. He recalls his own learning experiences fondly, noting how inspiring it was to be surrounded by other passionate musicians. Now, he aims to cultivate that same spirit of inspiration among his students.
Thompson’s classes will focus on introducing participants of all ages to essential skills in songwriting and production, encouraging a relaxed, pressure-free environment. He believes that music spaces can be sacred, serving as places for personal growth and connection without the pressure of fame or success.
His ultimate vision is to cultivate a close-knit community of creatives, offering a supportive space for individuals to nurture their passions, whether as a serious pursuit or a fulfilling hobby. Thompson recognizes that today’s digital distractions often lead people away from meaningful activities, and he hopes to inspire others to explore their interests in music.
