Spotify Launches Music Videos for Premium Users in US and Canada

Spotify Expands Music Video Access

Spotify has announced that it will make music videos available to its premium subscribers in the United States and Canada, as part of its strategy to compete with YouTube for a larger share of the market. This initiative aims to enhance the user experience by providing a more immersive way to enjoy music.

The rollout follows a successful beta launch in almost 100 markets last year, which has positioned Spotify to better compete with the music streaming services of other major players like Apple and Amazon. The initial catalog of music videos will feature content from popular artists such as Ariana Grande, Olivia Dean, BABYMONSTER, and Addison Rae.

Spotify has highlighted the impact that music videos can have on user engagement. The company reported that when fans discover a track accompanied by a music video, they are 34% more likely to stream it again and 24% more likely to save or share the track in the subsequent week. This data underscores the potential of video content in driving user interaction and retention.

By the end of this month, all premium users in the U.S. and Canada will have access to music videos. This move comes on the heels of Spotify’s recent success with its Wrapped feature, a year-end summary of users’ listening habits that attracted over 200 million engaged users within just 24 hours, marking a 19% increase from the previous year.

Engagement metrics are increasingly becoming a focal point for Spotify. CFO Christian Luiga noted at a recent tech conference that engagement can sometimes be more critical than sheer user numbers in assessing the company’s performance.

In addition to expanding its video offerings, Spotify is expected to raise its U.S. subscription prices in the first quarter of next year, following a price increase for its premium individual plan in over 150 markets during the September quarter. This strategy is part of Spotify’s ongoing efforts to drive earnings growth.

As the company prepares for this new chapter, CEO Daniel Ek is set to transition to the role of executive chairman in January, which may signal a shift in leadership focus as Spotify continues to evolve in the competitive streaming landscape.
