Congress Defends Local Radio with 200+ Cosponsors

More than 200 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have signed on to support the Local Radio Freedom Act (LRFA), a resolution that opposes the introduction of any new performance fees, taxes, royalties, or other charges on local radio stations.

The act highlights the critical role local radio plays in communities across the country, offering services like emergency alerts, local news, and entertainment that connect listeners in real-time.

Curtis LeGeyt, the President and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), emphasized the importance of local radio, stating that despite a stagnant Congress, lawmakers are hearing from their constituents about the need to protect this essential service.

Local radio has long been a reliable platform for delivering news, music, sports, and emergency information without additional costs to the listener. The potential imposition of a new performance fee could disrupt this service and harm both the audiences and the artists who rely on the medium.

The resolution was introduced by Representatives Steve Womack (R-AR-3) and Kathy Castor (D-FL-14) and is also supported by 26 cosponsors in the Senate.

In previous sessions, similar resolutions have gained significant bipartisan backing, with over 250 cosponsors across both chambers of Congress.
