John Catsimatidis, the CEO of Red Apple Media, has been named the 2025 Broadcaster of the Year by the New York State Broadcasters Association (NYSBA). David Donovan, President of the NYSBA, praised Catsimatidis for his exceptional leadership in revitalizing 77WABC and expanding Red Apple Media across the nation. “John has had unparalleled success turning around 77WABC and has been a driving force behind legislative efforts to keep AM radio in vehicles, a vital issue for all New Yorkers,” Donovan said.

In response, Catsimatidis expressed his gratitude, emphasizing the critical role of radio in people’s lives, particularly during times of disaster. He urged radio stations to help raise awareness about the ongoing efforts by car manufacturers to remove AM radio from new vehicles, calling it a threat to public safety. “Radio is often the only source of information during disasters. Together, we can stop this, and we must stop it,” he remarked.

Catsimatidis, a self-made billionaire, is also known for his philanthropy. He is the founder of Red Apple Group, which owns Gristedes, United Refining Company, and Red Apple Media. His entry into the media industry began with his purchase of 77WABC in March 2020, and since then, he has defied convention by introducing music radio weekends on a talk station. His Red Apple Audio Networks, which syndicates 77WABC’s programming, now reaches 495 affiliates nationwide.

In addition to his executive roles, Catsimatidis hosts The Cats Roundtable, a nationally syndicated show every Sunday morning, and co-hosts the award-winning Cats & Cosby with Rita Cosby every weekday afternoon. His relationships with political and business leaders provide him with exclusive access to high-profile newsmakers, including President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton, Senators Charles Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand, Ted Cruz, and many others.

Catsimatidis, along with his wife Margo, remains deeply committed to philanthropy. Together, they established the WABC Radio Foundation, which raises funds to support organizations that provide aid to those in need. Their personal contributions to charitable causes reflect their dedication to making a positive impact on society.
